The family of Ryan Corbett of New York confirmed his release, while the Taliban said Khan Mohammed, an Afghan serving a life sentence in California, was freed.

Jan. 21 (UPI) -- The United States and Afghanistan have executed a prisoner swap, the Taliban announced early Tuesday. Scarce details released on the exchange state that an Afghan national held in the United States was exchanged for at least one detained American, Ryan Corbett.

Two Americans held by the Taliban were exchanged for an Afghan imprisoned in the US on narco-terrorism charges.

The prisoner exchange was the result of "long and productive" negotiations between Afghan and American authorities, Afghanistan's foreign ministry said in a statement. Mohammad was arrested in eastern Afghanistan in 2006 and extradited to the U.S a year later, according to the DOJ website.

The deal was struck for Khan Mohammad, a member of the Taliban serving two life sentences in a U.S. prison on 'narco-terrorism charges.'

The last-minute deal was the final capstone in Biden’s campaign to release dozens of Americans detained abroad.

Ryan Corbett, a Dansville resident detained by the Taliban in 2022, has been released alongside another American, William McKenty, in a prisoner swap. The deal also returned Taliban member Khan Mohammad to Afghanistan.
