Southern Miss football hired Marshall's Charles Huff as its new coach on Sunday. Huff has been the Marshall coach for the last four seasons. He replaces Will Hall, who was fired by the Golden Eagles on Oct. 20 midway through his fourth season.

After turning Marshall University into a force in the Sunbelt, HBCU product Charles Huff will look to do the same at Southern Miss.

To replace Huff 24 hours after winning a conference crown, Marshall quickly turned to NC State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson.

Southern Miss announced Sunday that it has hired Huff as its next football head coach. Huff had reportedly been the leading candidate for the job for the past week, but it was not official until after Marshall finished its season. Huff will be formally introduced as USM’s coach at a press conference Thursday at M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg.

Huff, in his fourth year as the Marshall head coach, led the Thundering Herd to a 10-3 record and a 31-3 championship victory over Louisiana this past Saturday night. The 41-year-old Huff has spent the last four seasons at Marshall, where he went 32-20 and won the Sun Belt Conference championship this year. Prior to that, he was assistant head coach and running backs coach at Alabama for two seasons under Nick Saban, helping the Crimson Tide to a national championship in 2020.
