Members of the Vermont State Police and Rescue Team found the body in a field west of the Middlebury College campus, where Smith is a student, at around 1:30 p.m. local time, the Middlebury Police Department said in a statement. The remains were discovered in Cornwall, Vt., near the college’s organic farm, The Knoll.

Police secured the area, and the Vermont State Police began a death investigation. The body will be brought to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to confirm identity and determine the cause and manner of death. The autopsy is expected to be performed Friday, Oct. 24.
