The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Sunday reported a human New World screwworm (NWS) case.

The Department of Health and Human Services reported the first human case of New World Screwworm in the U.S. The diagnosis was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control. The disease appeared in a traveler who’d been returning to the U.S. from Central America, where the disease is already present.

The first human case in the U.S. of a flesh-eating parasite was reported in Maryland. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said a case of the flesh-eating New World screwworm parasite has been detected on Aug. 4 in a Marylander who had just returned to the U.S. after traveling to El Salvador.
