Edinburgh's charm can be seen everywhere, from the cobblestones to the castles. For all of its history, though, the city's modern side is also on full display in the vibrant food and arts scenes.

Hoisted high atop Edinburgh, as if monitoring the city below, Edinburgh Castle is not only one of Scotland's most recognized landmarks, but one of the country's most-visited attractions.

The flagpole which has been at Edinburgh Castle for more than 50 years has snapped in high winds. The pole, which is on top of the Crown Square clock, broke in the early hours of Monday.
