(Reuters) -Billionaire investor Bill Ackman in an X post on Sunday suggested merging U.S. government-sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, saying the move would help reduce mortgage rates and achieve huge synergies both in their operations and in the trading price.

President Donald Trump reportedly wants the U.S. to sell Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac stock in a quest to move mortgage finance firms from full federal control.

Some officials believe the offering could raise around $30 billion and value the combined firms at roughly $500 billion or more.
