Sanding the wood There's no avoiding sanding the table top you're refinishing; it's the only way to get the strip the old finish off and get your table smooth enough for staining it.

For stain and paint jobs: Hamm recommends a clear coat to help with longevity—look for polyurethane or polycrylic, both require two coats. Sand between coats using fine-grit paper.
