More than half of New Jersey’s coastline is still at risk of major flooding, the most severe classification through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), on Monday amid a vicious coastal storm battering the East Coast. Newsweek reached out to NWS Mount Holly, New Jersey, by phone for comment.

“It’s going to be a very prolonged event, hours and hours and hours, multiple high tide cycles of this wind coming out of the east or northeast just pounding on the coastline, so we do expect major flooding, especially in New Jersey,” DaSilva shared.

A powerful storm off the East Coast with tropical winds and rains could develop into a nor’easter over the weekend into Monday. It’s forecast to bring heavy rain, gusty winds, rough surf and coastal flooding.

While the peculiar holiday-weekend nor’easter spared the Jersey Shore catastrophic flooding, it was the latest episode in a two-month assault on fragile beaches in their 100-year battle with the Atlantic Ocean.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for parts of New Jersey, in effect until 8 p.m. EDT Monday.
