The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall for nearly 60,500 Audi and Volkswagen vehicles from 2021 to 2023 due to a critical gear display issue.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the recall of more than 60,000 Volkswagens and Audis after it was found that the instrument panel may not display what gear the vehicle is in. The NHTSA said the recall affects some 2021 through 2023 ID.4 Volkswagens and 2022 through 2023 Audi Q4 e-Tron and Q4 e-Tron Sportsbacks.
The recall includes 2021-2023 VW ID.4 and 2022-2023 Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q4 E-Tron Sportback electric crossovers, which share the VW Group's MEB platform. These vehicles left the factory with software that might not show the letter "N" for "neutral" in the instrument cluster when the car is shifted into that position, according to the NHTSA.
Volkswagen is recalling 60,490 ID.4 and Audi Q4 EVs in the U.S. due to a problem with the transmission gear selection display. Some of the SUVs may not indicate to drivers that the vehicle is still in neutral. If it’s stopped on slanted ground, the vehicle could move forwards or backwards unexpectedly.
