Fernandes put United ahead just before half time by curling a free-kick past David Raya, whose positioning was suspect. Arsenal had dominated plenty of possession before that, but they had struggled to create many clear-cut chances.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has claimed that “a bit of stupidity” could have cost the team a defeat against Manchester United on Sunday. Rice rescued a point for the Gunners at Old Trafford after Bruno Fernandes had opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick.

Arsenal walked away from Old Trafford with a point, but their Premier League title chase is still on life support. Mikel Arteta’s side controlled the first half but
