Empress Eugénie’s brooch — a piece of jewelery that reflected her religious faith — was stolen in a daring, daylight heist at the Louvre in Paris on Sunday morning.

Other items taken included a bow brooch that once belonged to Gilded Age socialite Caroline Astor and the reliquary brooch of Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III. The diamond-encrusted brooch was made by Alfred Bapst for her in 1855 and features 94 diamonds in total,

The crown was reportedly found damaged in the Louvre robbery. In a shocking daytime heist at France’s Louvre Museum, thieves stole nine pieces of jewelry from the Apollo Gallery, which is home to the French Crown Jewels. One of those pieces stolen was reportedly Empress Eugenie’s crown, which was later found damaged outside the museum.
