Multiple warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland from midnight on Thursday.

Storm Éowyn is being fuelled by an unusually powerful powerful jet stream in which wind speeds of more than 250mph have been recorded. The low pressure system is currently tracking across Northern Ireland and over to Scotland, with the strongest winds expected on its southern flank.

Storm Éowyn – pronounced "ay-oh-win" – and the fifth named storm of the season will undergo rapid development during Thursday as it moves across the Atlantic. It will be fuelled by a very powerful jet stream which is fast moving air high in the atmosphere where wind speeds are around 260mph (418km/h).

Storm Éowyn is gathering strength, supercharged by the Arctic blast that moved through the US, and has the potential to trigger power outages and travel disruptions across the UK later this week.

Heavy rain and strong winds are set to sweep aside a recent spell of settled weather in the West Country when Storm Éowyn arrives. Conditions will start to become more unsettled during Thursday, before a bout of extensive wet and very windy weather beginning.

Gusts of up to 90mph are expected across the country during the first named storm of 2025.
