AUSTIN, Texas (KAUZ) - The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reminding Texans the upcoming changes to the state’s Vehicle Safety Inspection Program begins on Jan. 1, 2025.

On January 1, Texas drivers will no longer be required to patronize a local vehicle inspection station before registering their vehicle with the state for another year. Instead, they’ll be charged an additional $7.50, under an inspection program replacement fee, when they register their vehicles.
