After more than 71 days at sea paddling alone, Marin kayaker Cyril Derreumaux arrived in the Caribbean this week, completing a 2,500-mile journey across the Atlantic that he began just before Christmas.
Europe is warmed by heat from ocean currents, which move water from the warm tropics to the colder North Atlantic. Once the warm, salty waters from the tropics reach the polar region, they cool enough to sink to the depths and flow back towards the Southern Ocean.
Kimmer O’Reilly of Tri-Cities reclines on the deck of Kite, a 34-foot Sparkman & Stephens yacht he plans to sail across the Atlantic Ocean. Locals have probably spotted O’Reilly riding around the Tri-Cities on his motorcycle with his Australian Shepherd service dog, Casper, strapped to his back.
We are months away from the start of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season and now is the best time to start preparing.
Panic broke out on a transatlantic flight after a passenger reportedly tried to open an emergency door at 35,000 feet. The incident occurred on Plus Ultra Flight 701, travelling from Madrid’s Barajas Airport to Caracas, Venezuela, on February 28, while the plane was over the Atlantic Ocean, according to Daily Mail.
Waters from the Atlantic may be disrupting the layers of Arctic Ocean water that support sea ice formation and retention, researchers say
Wildfires continue to burn in the Carolina Forest area. Firefighters are working to extinguish the blaze, and helicopters and planes have been brought in to dump water on the fires.
The AMOC is weakening, which could disrupt climate, increase extreme weather, hurt global economies, and alter ocean ecosystems.
Seeing as we are not all equipped with the gumption required to paddle across the Atlantic Ocean, let’s live vicariously through Gerhard Moolman, who recently did just that. On December 1, the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club paddler started his adventure from Cape Verde on his way to Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana.
Scientists who study the ocean say the waters off New England had another warm year, though the pace of warming slowed considerably compared to the earlier part of the decade.
“We are seeing lots of rays and squid around us at night, hunting the flying fish. In the middle of the subtropical ocean seeing such large predators is unusual, suggesting that the nutrient-induced changes to the plankton community are also useful to the rest of the marine food chain over the ridge.”
