Well yesterday was Mardi Gras, the biggest party day of the year in the Big Easy, and the Weather Channel made the bold move of going live from Bourbon Street to report on the weather. (We ended up getting about half an hour of heavy rain yesterday evening, but other than that the weather was perfect all weekend).
Drag queens Fatsy Cline and Varla Jean Merman hosted the 61st annual Bourbon Street Awards at noon Tuesday on the corner of St. Anne and Dauphine streets. The annual event spotlights elaborate, often satirical, costumes while raising money for charity.
With the sun rising, people stumbled out of bars and saluted the trash collectors. A drunken couple shrieked and leaped onto sidewalks to escape from the cascade of waste as Nunez muttered about Bourbon Street’s “typical foolishness.”
"Mardi Gras isn't just about Mardi Gras Day, which is a big day, but it really is about the over two weeks that we've managed through again," said Cantrell.
