On Monday at 2:03 p.m. the National Weather Service issued an updated winter storm warning valid from Tuesday 6 a.m. until Wednesday 6 a.m. for Lowndes, Montgomery, Macon, Bullock, Russell, Pike and Barbour counties.

The Winter Storm Warning, which impacts most portions of southeast Alabama, Panhandle Florida and southwest Georgia, will be in effect from noon central on Tuesday, January 21, until 6 a.m. central Wednesday, January 22. Our area is also, as of Monday afternoon, under a Freeze Warning and a Cold Weather Advisory.

The beaches even may see a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, the weather service said, with the mainly snow expected.

Hundreds of Alabama National Guard service members have been called to duty to help in the winter storm approaching the state. According to a news release, the activation on Jan. 19 involves more than 400 members who will operate out of seven regional facilities from Birmingham to Mobile.
