How did Guillermo del Toro’s new Frankenstein film take inspiration from the Hunterian Museum? Frankenstein features an anatomical table inspired by the Evelyn Tables, which are on display in the Hunterian Museum. The tables were prepared by Giovanni Leoni d’Este, Dissector to the Professor of Anatomy at Padua University, Italy, and brought to England by the writer John Evelyn in the 1640s. Ball-and-cage Heart Valve The heart’s four valves control blood flow through the heart with every beat. If damage or disease impair the valves, surgeons can replace them, most commonly the mitral and aortic valves on the heart’s left side. The Starr-Edwards valve was the first artificial mechanical valve used successfully in humans, and uses a ball-and-cage design to control the flow of blood.
