Today we honor Grand Rapids native, Roger B. Chaffee, who was killed in the Apollo 1 fire along with Gus Grissom and Ed White 50 years ago on this day. Following a skilled career with the US Navy, Chaffee was chosen in 1963 from over 1,800 applicants to join the Astronaut Corps. He underwent rigorous training before being selected as the pilot for the Apollo 1 flight, as 1 of 3 who were our nation’s choice to be the first to land a spacecraft on the moon.
