Shark spotted 500m deep in Antarctica’s near-freezing waters for first time ever
A sleeper shark has been filmed in Antarctic waters for the first time. Researchers from the University of Western Australia captured the footage in January 2025 near the South Shetland Islands. The 10 to 13 foot shark was seen at 490 metres deep in near freezing water, challenging assumptions that sharks do not inhabit the Antarctic Ocean.
