On September, 17 1944, the 82nd Airborne was tasked with seizing and holding several bridges around Nijmegen including one over the Maas-Waal Canal. With the other bridges having been destroyed by the Germans, the bridge at Heumen had to be taken so for the ground forces that were approaching from the south.
