My mum was required to go to Port Hedland Court to obtain citizenship of her own country as an Aboriginal woman. The law in WA was that you couldnt be both an Aboriginal person and an Australian citizen-you had to give one up. What that did was it weaponised cultural identity. Aboriginal people turned on each other - it became a divide between the haves and the have nots.
